YouTube offering “official” download option?

I was busy writing a lesson plan idea for the Industrial Age and assembly lines this afternoon and thought the short I Love Lucy candy wrapping scene clip would be a perfect intro. Headed over to YouTube, found a great version and was looking for the embed option when I noticed something different.

A download option.

It wasn’t there last week. At least, I don’t think it was. I know it wasn’t there about a month ago when I wrote a short post describing a couple of ways to download YouTube clips using third-party tools.

YouTube did offer an “official” download option several years ago during the presidential election on a few selected political clips. But I haven’t seen this version before. I did go to about 10 different category types to see if this option was limited to just a couple of clips.

And while this option may not be on every video, it was on every one I looked at.

So . . . cool beans.

Update 5-23-2011

It’s official. I’m an idiot.

I had earlier installed a plugin on my various Firefox browsers that provided a way to download from Youtube. With the different Youtube code changes, the Firefox plugin had quit working. A recent software update by the plugin coders got it working again.

So . . . if it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t. But if you’re using Firefox, the plugin works great. Thanks to those who helped me realize the error of my ways!

You should be able to find the button directly below the video itself. From the left side (under the video), I see the following buttons: “Like,” “Add to,” “Share” and “Download As.”

Clicking the “Download As” gives you a few different choices to select from.

It may not yet be on every video.

Looks like they removed the option…tried the video you referenced and it is gone.

From your screen shot, it looks like you have the Firefox Youtube Downloader add on…

Just added it on my computer and it has the same yellow/orange logo. You can find it here:

Yep. I had that plugin installed on both Firefox browsers on Mac / PC and with different Youtube updates, it had quit working.

After your earlier comment, went back to Windows as well as tried a few other browsers. New Youtube code and / or new plugin update got it working again.

      So . . . it’s official. I’m an idiot.
